One of the world's most renowned architecture prizes, the "ICONIC AWARD", was given in Munich as part of the Expo Real trade fair on 5 October. The sliding window cero won a "Best of Best 2015" trophy in the Façade product category at the fair, proving to be a hit with architects and designers alike.
The champagne corks were rightly popped at Solarlux, the manufacturer behind cero. After all, the ICONIC AWARD is a highly respected architecture and design competition which takes account of how various disciplines interact. Alongside the sliding window from the family-owned company in Lower Saxony, numerous international products and projects, including the Alfenzbrücke bridge in Vorarlberg, Austria, and the residential complex 25 Green in Turin, Italy, were presented top-ranking "Best of Best" awards. The awards ceremony was held at the Pinakothek der Moderne in cooperation with "Die Neue Sammlung – The Design Museum". Dr. Angelika Nollert, manageress of "Die Neue Sammlung – The Design Museum" welcomed more than 300 guests to the museum as part of this event.
At the zenith of development
The cero sliding window left the jury in no doubt: even the term "inside outside" shows the holistic approach taken to the design of this product. It further reflects the philosophy which has inspired Solarlux to create successful glazing solutions for more than 30 years: "Our windows and façades connect indoors with outdoors, and allow these to blend seamlessly together. cero takes our core idea to the next level," explained Stefan Holtgreife, Managing Director at Solarlux, who accepted the prize together with his father, Herbert Holtgreife, Managing Director and founder. Reflecting on the interdisciplinary nature of the ICONIC AWARDS the two concluded: "Our entire team is delighted to have struck a chord both with the organisers and in the relevant fields – and that at international level." The prize was presented on stage by Andrej Kupetz, General Manager of the Rat für Formgebung (German Design Council).
Function meets aesthetics
cero won over the jury in terms of its application, as the window combines exceptional transparency with ingenious functionality. Although cero allows for pronouncedly large-scale window façades of up to 15 square metres, these still appear light. They can be opened and closed easily and quietly, either manually or with a motor. cero boasts expansive glass panels and extremely slender frames and sections. Measuring in at just 34 mm, these are barely the width of two fingers. The edges are kept in the all-glass look, while the threshold-free transitions complete the elegant design.
Smart in all disciplines
Transparency played a key role in the production of cero as well: this conforms to the international environmental management standard ISO 14001 and stipulates continual reduction in environmental impact during production. Contemporary safety aspects were also cleverly integrated into the cero design: cero has been certified to RC2 in accordance with the current burglar resistance standards. The sliding window is designed for the international market, cero is available as an uninsulated version and with double or triple glazing for different climate zones.
Successful design, comfort and technology
The ICONIC AWARD Best of Best is already the second renowned design prize for cero – within the space of one year. Back in spring, the German manufacturer also took home the iF Gold Award. What the double win proves: the sliding window has caught the attention of the design and architecture world and has proved to be a contemporary solution for modern building and living aesthetics.
Expert assessments from across all fields
The ICONIC AWARD focusses on outstanding, exemplary architecture and its integration into the urban, cultural and economic context. An independent expert jury is responsible for deciding who should win the ICONIC AWARDS. The jury is made up of representatives from the fields of architecture, interior design, design and brand communication. The prize was awarded in the five main categories of Architecture, Interior, Product, Communication and Concept.
